I am honoured to call Haida Gwaii my home and I am so thankful for all the opportunities that the island has granted me. Being awarded this scholarship is absolutely life changing and I am beyond grateful to the Scholarship Foundation of the Pacific for enabling me to pursue my passion for biology.
I am looking forward to attending Simon Fraser University for the next 4 years to major in biological sciences. After the completion of this degree, I hope to return to Haida Gwaii as an environmental biologist to help preserve and protect the delicate and diverse ecosystems that are currently suffering. Haida Gwaii is a place with so much beauty that has so much to offer and I want to help sustain the islands and their resources the best that I can.
I want to thank the Scholarship Foundation of the Pacific immensely for their generosity in granting me this incredible opportunity. I would like to show my appreciation by doing everything that I can to represent the foundation, as well as my community to the best of my abilities.
This means the world to me, thank you!
Sincerely,
Kaiya Dyment
UPDATE - April, 2026
I am currently finishing my 4th year at Simon Fraser University, and will be completing my studies in December. The last 4 years have been quite the journey, with plenty of ups and downs. My time at SFU has made me face and overcome many challenges, but has also provided me with invaluable knowledge that I will carry with me throughout my life.
I will be graduating next June with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Resource and Environmental Management, and hope to then return home and begin a career in environmental restoration and monitoring. I would like to express my gratitude to the Scholarship Foundation of the Pacific for their support throughout this journey and for granting me the opportunity to attain such a valuable education. This foundation has opened up so many doors for me, and I am forever grateful.
